Guatemala

Huehuetenango sits at the northwestern edge of Guatemala, where the mountains reach 1,800–2,000 meters and dry winds sweep down from Mexico's Tehuantepec plain. It's one of the highest, most remote coffee-growing regions in Central America — and one of the most exceptional. The 400 smallholder families who grow this coffee tend an average of just 2 acres each, intercropping coffee with corn and beans for their own tables. Small plots, carefully kept.

Because most producers lack the infrastructure to process their own cherry, they partner with Unitrade Coffee, whose centrally located wet mill brings consistency and quality to the entire community's harvest. Unitrade also established CoffeeCare — an organization focused on education, nutrition, and health — so that while farmers are in the fields, their children have somewhere to learn and grow. The cup reflects all of it: Bourbon, Catuai, and Caturra varieties, fully washed and sun and mechanically dried, producing a medium roast with bright notes of lemon, lime, nougat, and brown sugar.
